GUIDE LEGEND & QUICK REFERENCE
Featured Winery (driver favorite)
Typical Tasting Fee:  $15 - $20 per flight
Best Seasons:  April - November
REGION 1: MONTICELLO AVA / CHARLOTTESVILLE -- 15 Wineries
Blenheim Vineyards
Charlottesville, VA ~75 min from Richmond
Signature Wines: Cabernet Franc, Viognier
Features: Owned by Dave Matthews, eco-friendly winemaking practices, occasional live music events
Insider Tip: The Dave Matthews connection brings crowds, but the wines hold up on their own. Cab Franc is their strongest pour. Staff are knowledgeable.
Pippin Hill Farm & Vineyards
North Garden, VA ~80 min from Richmond
Features: Garden-to-table dining, cooking classes, stunning event space, immaculate landscaped grounds
Insider Tip: Best stop for couples and foodies. The culinary program here is the real draw -- the food rivals the wine. Book a cooking class in advance if that's your thing. Popular wedding venue, so weekends can be busy with private events.
Eastwood Farm & Winery
Charlottesville, VA ~70 min from Richmond Open 7 days
Features: Wine, craft beer, and hard cider all on one property. Dog-friendly. Chef Andrew Partridge runs the kitchen.
Insider Tip: The best stop when your group can't agree on what to drink. Wine snobs, beer people, cider fans -- everyone's covered. The dog-friendly policy makes it relaxed and easygoing. Great fallback when you need something for everyone.
Stinson Vineyards
Crozet, VA ~75 min from Richmond
Signature Wines: Bordeaux-inspired blends
Features: True garagiste operation -- started in a three-car garage. Blue Ridge views, B&B on property.
Insider Tip: This is the small-batch artisan pick. The three-car-garage origin story is real, and you can taste the hands-on craftsmanship. Intimate setting, no crowds. If you value winemaker connection over Instagram moments, put this on the list.
Southwest Mountains Vineyards
Keswick, VA ~70 min from Richmond
Winemaker: Boela Gerber (22 years of winemaking experience in South Africa)
Features: Restored 1903 barn as tasting room, set in Virginia horse country
Insider Tip: Under the radar. South African winemaker with 20+ years experience, pouring in a restored 1903 barn. Worth the stop.
Hazy Mountain Vineyard & Brewery
Afton, VA ~85 min from Richmond
Features: Secret Supper Club events, on-site brewery, stone-fired pizza
Insider Tip: Wine plus beer plus stone-fired pizza -- it's a triple threat. The Secret Supper Club is exactly what it sounds like: limited-seat, multi-course dinners that sell out fast. If you see availability, book it. Otherwise, the pizza alone is worth the stop.
Horton Vineyards
Gordonsville, VA ~65 min from Richmond Est. 1989
Signature Wines: Virginia Viognier (they pioneered it), Rkatsiteli (ancient Georgian grape), Wildkat
Features: The original Virginia Viognier producer, home to unusual and rare grape varieties you won't find elsewhere in the state
Insider Tip: Dennis Horton basically put Virginia Viognier on the map. If you want to taste grapes you've never heard of -- like Rkatsiteli, an 8,000-year-old Georgian variety -- this is the only place in the region doing it. Wine nerds love this stop.
Afton Mountain Vineyards
Afton, VA ~85 min from Richmond
Features: 360-degree panoramic mountain views, vines planted since the 1970s -- one of Virginia's oldest vineyard sites
Insider Tip: Old-guard Virginia wine. The 360-degree mountain views are the best in the region. Vines planted since the 1970s give the wines real depth. Quiet and unhurried.
Glass House Winery
Free Union, VA ~80 min from Richmond
Features: Tropical conservatory greenhouse tasting room, estate-grown wines, intimate and eclectic atmosphere
Insider Tip: You're tasting wine in a tropical greenhouse. Small operation, personal attention. Not for groups wanting a big scene.
Mount Ida Reserve
Near Charlottesville, VA ~75 min from Richmond
Features: Situated on a 5,000-acre working farm, 27 acres of vineyard, true farm-to-glass winemaking
Insider Tip: 5,000-acre working farm with 27 acres of vineyard. Everything is estate-grown. The scale sets it apart from the usual tasting-room circuit.
PRO TIP: Pacing Your Tour
Visit 3-4 wineries max per tour. After that, palate fatigue sets in and everything starts tasting the same. Start with lighter whites and build toward bold reds as the day progresses. Drink water between stops.
REGION 2: RICHMOND AREA -- 9 Wineries
James River Cellars
Glen Allen, VA ~20 min from Richmond $5 tasting (13-15 varieties)
Signature Wines: Gewürztraminer
Features: Exceptional value tasting -- $5 gets you 13 to 15 wine varieties. Closest quality winery to Richmond proper.
Insider Tip: A genuine local gem. Five dollars for up to 15 wines is the best tasting deal in the region. Only 20 minutes from Richmond, so it's a perfect first stop to warm up or last stop before heading home. The Gewürztraminer is surprisingly good.
New Kent Winery
New Kent, VA ~30 min from Richmond
Winemaker: Tom Payette
Features: Talleysville Brewing Company on-site -- wine and craft beer under one roof
Insider Tip: Tom Payette consults for wineries across the state, so the wine is solid. But the real selling point for mixed groups is the on-site brewery. Wine for some, beer for others, everyone's happy. Easy drive east of Richmond.
Saudé Creek Vineyards
Lanexa, VA ~40 min from Richmond Wed-Mon 11am-6pm, Fri to 9pm
Signature Wines: Saudé Creek Red, Pamunkey White
Features: Rural setting, extended Friday hours, peaceful countryside atmosphere
Insider Tip: This is the "unplug and breathe" winery. If your group wants to slow down and decompress, Saudé Creek delivers. Friday evenings until 9pm are especially nice -- bring a blanket, grab a bottle, and watch the sun set. Closed Tuesdays.
Jolene Family Winery
Richmond Area ~15 min from Richmond
Features: Lakeside setting, greenhouse tasting area, rotating food trucks, RVA Cheese Girl collaboration
Insider Tip: Closest winery to the city -- 15 minutes out. Lakeside setting, food trucks, cheese boards. Good for a shorter outing.
Ashton Creek Vineyard
Chester, VA ~25 min from Richmond
Winemaker: Alan Thibault
Features: Kitchen on-site serving food to pair with tastings
Insider Tip: The south-side option. If your group is coming from south of the river, this saves you the drive north. Solid wines, on-site kitchen, and way less traffic than heading up to Charlottesville. Good for a relaxed half-day.
7 Lady Vineyards at Dover Hall
Manakin-Sabot, VA ~25 min from Richmond
Features: Virginia and international wines on the menu, regular wine dinner events, elegant estate setting
Insider Tip: West-end events vibe. Dover Hall is a beautiful estate, and the wine dinners are popular with the corporate and social crowd. If your group wants something polished and event-driven, check their calendar. Good for team outings that need a refined setting.
Fifty-Third Winery & Vineyard
Louisa, VA ~50 min from Richmond Mon-Sun 11am-5pm
Features: Heart of the Virginia Wine Trail, private tastings available, flexible for groups. Groups of 8+ call (540) 894-1536 to arrange.
Insider Tip: Midway point between Richmond and Charlottesville, which makes it ideal for flexible routing. You can add it to a Charlottesville itinerary or build a shorter day around it. Private tastings for groups are a nice touch. Accommodating staff.
Cooper Vineyards
Louisa, VA ~50 min from Richmond
Winemaker: Graham Bell
Signature Wines: Noche (dessert wine)
Features: Two-story glass tasting room, voted best tasting room 2012 & 2013, Friday live music
Insider Tip: The two-story glass tasting room is an architecture destination in its own right. Even if you're not a wine person, the building is worth seeing. The Noche dessert wine is their standout -- sweet, rich, and a great conversation piece. Friday music nights are lively.
PRO TIP: Richmond Area Strategy
Richmond-area wineries work well for half-day tours or as first/last stops on a Charlottesville day trip. Upper Shirley or James River Cellars make a solid finale — close to the city, no long drive ahead.
